Closing Ball with dance performance “The Rose of Turaida” by the early dance group “Ballare”, early music group “Trakula” (Latvia) performance and DJ set for discussions, dance and party.
Early dance group Ballare
Was founded in Riga, Latvia in year 2000. It’s repertoire consists of dances from different European countries – Italy, France, Germany, Spain etc., starting from the Middle ages, through the Renaissance of 15th and 16th centuries, until the 17th century England. Most of the dances are authentic – the sources are the works of choreographers of the period which have lasted up until now, but there are also world-known dance historians’ and choreographers’ dance productions and interpretations in Ballare’s repertoire.
During these years Ballare has performed in numerous concerts and events offering its audience varied, bright, theatrical performances – presenting the court dance of the period, and also portraying stories and legends. These performances always have been exciting and rewarded with a wide responsiveness from audience. What’s more – Ballare dancers ask their audience to join in the dance therefore creating a pleasant and friendly atmosphere without drawing a line between the dancers and the audience.
Ballare is interested in dance as well as in people of the Renaissance period, their relationships, culture, environment, history, food. Costumes representing each period, are made by the dancers themselves, sticking to the historic sources and using appropriate methods.
Since 2004 the artistic leader of Ballare is Guna Ezermale (Mag. Artis) – certified ballet-dancer, professional choreographer and author and consultant of many dance, theatre and early music performances.
* Ballare (it.) – to dance.

“The Rose of Turaida”
We will tell you a legend about the Rose of Turaida, about pure love and fidelity.
This legend takes us to the land of Livonia and Turaida Castle. There lived a girl named Maija – so beautiful she was called the Rose of Turaida. She was in love with castle’s young gardener Viktors, and he gave her a red scarf as a proof of his love. Bothe were about to get married when a Polish officer, Adam Jakubovski laid his eyes on Maija. Despite how hard he tried, Maija rejected the proud Pole. Feeling humiliated Jakubovski decided to play with deceit. He sent his servant Skudrics to Maija with an unsigned letter asking her to meet in a cave next to the castle – the usual dating place for Maija and Viktors.
When Maija realized she was trapped she challenged Jakubovski by saying: „I have a magic scarf that protects its wearer against injury. If you cut it, I will be yours!” Being superstitious, Jakubovski believed her and killed her.
Viktors was the first suspect for murder, as his abandoned ax was found in the cave. He was about to be executed when at the very last moment Skurdics ran in and revealed the truth.
But Jakubovski, regretting what he had done, killed himself.
Early music group “Trakula” (Latvia)
Performs instrumental and vocal music from medieval and renaissance period. In its scope there is also traditional music from all over Europe, which “Trakula” is performing with its own characteristic touch. One of the band’s major focuses for years has been early dance music – “Trakula” numerous times has accompanied early dance groups in their performances. “Trakula” is a regular guest in early music festivals, theatre performances and different historical celebrations in Latvia and abroad.
